As you may have noticed this season, My Brother’s Keeper is utilizing our blog to highlight the importance of school attendance and how education relates to breaking the cycle of poverty. School attendance is imperative for academic success. The Baltimore Attendance Incentive Project inspires attendance!

Attendance plays a major role in the academic success of young students. To put it simply, school-aged children should be in school when they are supposed to. Student attendance can plummet for several reasons including sickness, lack of transportation, lack of resources, and socioeconomic hardships.

If you are a parent, you should recognize that missing a few days of school here and there can negatively impact your child’s success, understanding, and academic values for years to come. Chronic absence, identified in Maryland as 20 days missed or more, is also a contributing factor to the high school dropout rate.
