Earlier this week on July 5, the Baltimore Sun reported that Baltimore’s Health Care for Homeless Inc. was granted $1.26 million in federal funding in order to provide housing assistance and support services to low-income individuals with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and their families. Any Maryland resident can tell you that the weather here is incredibly unpredictable, but in the summertime one thing is for certain – humidity takes over. Many people in the Baltimore homeless community will struggle to find an open shelter bed in the near future. 

On May 12th, the Baltimore Sun reported that the federal government cut $3.8 million in aid to an array of nonprofit and faith-based organizations. Federal officials say this decision was made in an effort redirect funds nationwide towards permanent housing for the homeless, as opposed to temporarily facilities. Homelessness is a widespread concern that plagues individuals in Baltimore and throughout the world. It is fundamentally born from poverty, lack of affordable housing and restricted resources to healthcare. During the winter months, homelessness can be especially dangerous for its victims due to freezing temperatures and inclement weather that could incite fatal hypothermia. Homelessness in Baltimore is a serious issue.
