help homeless in baltimore in winter

Being homeless in Baltimore in the winter can be deadly. Find out more about local shelters and where to refer someone you see who needs shelter.

As weather forecasters predicted, Winter Storm Jonas blanketed Baltimore in upwards of two feet of snow – causing severe safety issues for all residents, especially those homeless in Baltimore. Winter is a troubling time for the thousands of homeless people inhabiting Baltimore (as many as 4,000 a night), as inclement weather and freezing temperatures can be truly deadly. A blanket and a flimsy form of shelter, such as a tent, is not enough to protect our fellow Baltimoreans from the dangers of hypothermia.

You can help. If you see a homeless person in need of shelter when temperatures have dropped below freezing, please refer them to one of the following shelters or call 311 to notify the city of Baltimore. Next time you are at the store, consider sparing a few dollars for a pack of hand warmers to donate to local shelters. You can also donate essential items like winter clothing, toothpaste, and food to My Brother’s Keeper and similar organizations.
