Did Salt Lake City Really Solve Their Issue With Homelessness?

While Salt Lake City may not have actually given all of their homeless population homes, what they’ve done certainly says a lot about homelessness.

In 2015, a segment on “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” touted Salt Lake City, Utah’s approach to their population suffering from homelessness as a miracle cure. The segment, at the hands of reporter Hasan Minhaj, painted a beautiful and simple picture: all Salt Lake City had done to rid themselves of homelessness was to give the homeless homes. It’s a novel idea and the numbers seemed to back up their report, leading to the story being picked up by The Washington Post, NBC News, and L.A. Times. The immense success left some wondering: if it was such an effective policy change, why didn’t more cities adopt it? Beyond that, did Salt Lake City really solve their chronic homelessness issue?

Baltimore County Emergency Shelter and Housing Options

To access Baltimore County emergency shelters you must call 410-853-3000 and choose option 2.

At My Brother’s Keeper, we understand that winter can be frightening and fatal for our brothers and sisters who are facing homelessness. Hypothermia can set in when temperatures are between 32 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. However, Baltimore is only authorized to declare a Code Blue Alert (which opens up emergency shelter) when temps fall to 13 degrees wind chill or lower. Thankfully, there are emergency shelters in place in Baltimore City and the surrounding counties that provide life-saving winter relief to those in need. This week we’d like to enlighten you on Baltimore County winter shelter and emergency housing options. Anne Arundel County Emergency Shelters for Winter Relief

Arundel House of Hope’s Winter Relief Program is a valuable resource for those in need of shelter from the harsh cold.

Winter is not over until March 20th, which means that the next couple of months are only going to grow more frigid and life threatening for the homeless communities in Baltimore and the surrounding areas. In last week’s blog, we shared that Hope for the Homeless reinstituted a rotating shelter program to address the need for emergency housing and winter relief in Harford County. This week, we would like to shed light on emergency housing options in Anne Arundel County.
