The 6th Annual MBK Classic is taking place on Monday, September 12th at the Cattail Creek Country Club.

Recently, we told you all about J.P. Blase Cooke and his selfless and inspiring contributions to My Brother’s Keeper and the Irvington community he grew up in, knew, and loved. While Blase Cooke is no longer with us physically, his undying spirit and generosity has made it possible for MBK to better serve the less fortunate members of his community for years to come.

We are thrilled to announce that the 6th Annual MBK Classic is taking place on Monday, September 12th at the Cattail Creek Country Club! This charitable event combines a stellar golf course with amazing friends and the support of a wonderful cause that was near and dear to Blase Cooke’s heart. Below is an interview with Joani Van Tuyl, who worked as Blase Cooke’s assistant and office manager for 25 years and continues to work in the Cooke Family Office. Read on to learn more about Blase Cooke and the success of MBK Annual Classic in her words. (more…)

MBK and the Oyster Recovery Program

Friday, May 22nd, 2015

OysterAfter our successful Bull Roast event this year, My Brother’s Keeper was able to help our community in a new and exciting way. After the Bull Roast event, MBK was able to collect and donate 7 bushels of oyster shells to donate to the Oyster Recovery Program. Each bushel contained 500 shells, which can become seeded with at least 10 baby oysters, in hopes to help replenish the oyster population of the Chesapeake Bay.

Be a Voice Hunger Action Symposium

Monday, November 3rd, 2014

Hunger SymposiumIn the middle of September, the Martin’s West in Baltimore was home to the 2014 Be a Voice Hunger Action Symposium. Leaders, partners, and advocates from all around the world gathered in Baltimore to discuss the ever growing problem of hunger in the state of Maryland. The event was sponsored by the Maryland Food Bank. There were polls, discussions, and awards distributed throughout the event to help raise more awareness of the hunger problem in Maryland. The main discussion areas included:

  1. Hunger with health intersection
  2. Hunger with employment intersection
  3. Hunger with education intersection

Here are some shocking statistics that were highlighted during the symposium:

  1. Of the members in attendance of the symposium, 41% said they know a neighbor or member of their community who is affected by hunger.
  2. Of that same group of members, 37% said they have a family member affected by hunger.
  3. According to the MFB, 1 in 7 people experience hunger in the Maryland area. That translates to 1 of 5 children.
  4. 38% of those faced with food insecurities earn too much for them to qualify for assistance with food.

There were a number of awards acknowledged during the symposium, one of which being the Ruby Rogers Award. This award is funded by the daughters of the late Ruby Rogers, who was one of the founding members of the Maryland Food Committee. We are pleased to say that our very own Executive Director Ms. Danise Jones-Dorsey was awarded this prestigious award during the symposium. Without the dedication and passion of Ms. Dorsey, My Brother’s Keeper wouldn’t be what it is today.

My Brother’s Keeper is as strong as our support. Our meal programs are based on community need as well as the grants available to us at the time. As our staff continues to work towards helping the community, outside help by way of donations and volunteers are always welcome! Become a part of something great and help make MBK where hope finds a home.

Mobile Clinic for Healthcare at MBK Tuesday, August 26th!

Monday, August 25th, 2014

Mobile Clinic

On Tuesday, August 26th, the Mobile Clinic from Health Care for the Homeless will be making its first ever stop at the J.P. Blase Cooke Center for My Brother’s Keeper. After its first appearance with My Brother’s Keeper, the Mobile Clinic will visit our location on every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. Services from the clinic will be available starting at 8:30am till 12 noon on Tuesday as residents of Irvington and the surrounding 21229 communities learn about what they offer through their Mobile Clinic.

With help from a grant provided by the Bureau of Primary Health Care supplemented with resources raised from Mercy Medical Center and the Order of Malta, HCH was able to create this customized mobile clinic to help residents in need of healthcare. Residents from all around are able to seek care from this clinic; whether they lack the transportation to reach their primary care doctor, or if they simply are unsure of what health care services are available. Those who already have an established primary health care provider can receive acute care while those who wish for HCH to be their primary provider can receive comprehensive care. Comprehensive care through the Mobile Clinic includes pediatric care, health care for women, and full physicals. Stepping onto the vehicle means stepping into a doctor’s office, as the 35-foot vehicle includes:

  • Reception Area
  • 2 Examination Rooms
  • Outreach Work Space
  • Wheelchair Accessibility

My Brother’s Keeper is pleased to work with Health Care for the Homeless to provide such a service to our guests that we strive to care for. This Mobile Clinic is the next stepping stone to building our dream of opening our very own health clinic, where MBK can provide health services for our guests from Irvington and 21229 neighborhoods. MBK will continue to provide meal programs, workforce development assistance, as well as social and human services through our J.P. Blase Cooke Center and encourage those in the community to visit our center whenever needed.

My Brother’s Keeper is as strong as our support. As our staff continues to work towards helping the community, outside help by way of donations and volunteers are always welcome! Become a part of something great and help make MBK where hope finds a home.
