Writing your Cover Letter

Cover-LetterWhen it comes to applying for a new job, there are several components that need to be in place. Before you head in for your first interview, you will be required to fill out a job application. The job application will require you to include pieces of information about yourself and then a resume will be requested. After the resume, some applications will ask for a cover letter. Even if the letter isn’t required, it can help catch the eye of your potential employer as they look through applications. While many know what a resume is, some may not be clear as to what a cover letter is or what it should include.

What is a cover letter?

A cover letter is the opportunity for you to introduce yourself to your potential employer and to state your reason for applying to the job. You can also highlight a few of your skills as well as request a time to meet with the employer face to face. It also shows your potential employer how effectively you can communicate, which can make a big difference.

How should I write my cover letter?

It is important to keep your letter to a single page, no matter how much you have to say. As you begin to write your letter, consider the needs of the employer in comparison to your skills. Using an active voice without using long and complicated sentences is a great way to catch the attention of the individual reading the letter.

How should a cover letter be organized?

Your letter should begin with an opening paragraph that introduces yourself and states why you are writing the letter. Your second and third paragraphs should include some skills you feel would be essential to the job as well as some past experiences that could be impressive to your employer. Your closing paragraph should include a call to action that stresses how you wish to meet in person. You should also thank the potential employer for taking the time to consider you for the position.
