Here at My Brother’s Keeper, we do our best to emphasize the importance of giving back to your community and the value in helping other people often. We want to encourage you to make a difference in the place you call home whether it means volunteering your time serving food in our kitchen, stressing the importance of school attendance to your children, or donating the clothing you no longer need to the less fortunate. The list goes on and on.
Today, we wanted to remind you that it’s not just people in your community that need your help. We urge you to join the Earth Day movement and take action towards building a healthier, more sustainable environment here in Baltimore. If you’d like to benefit MBK this weekend, don’t forget to grab a ticket to our Spring Jazz BBQ Event happening on Sunday, April 24th!
Why is Earth Day Important?
Earth Day, celebrated globally each year on April 22nd, is a movement in its 46th year that aims to address climate change, make groundbreaking strides in sustainability, and further protect the Earth for future generations. In a fast moving technological world, it can be hard for people to realize just how much of our planet’s resources they are draining. We could all stand to be more environmentally conscious, and Earth Day is our reminder. With more than one billion people now participating in Earth Day activities, it is considered the largest civic observance in the world.
How to Celebrate Earth Day in Baltimore
Daily, MBK staff and volunteers clean MBK’s footprint of trash (soda cans, juice bottles, carry-out containers, snack wrappers, etc). We particularly pay attention to the storm drains because we don’t want to pollute the Chesapeake Bay, which is important to the health of Maryland’s eco-system. Whether you decide to plant a tree, start a garden, or attend an environmental event in Baltimore this Earth Day – you should know your efforts make a difference. Here’s some encouragement from the Earth Day movement’s website:
“Today. Right here and right now. Earth Day is more than just a single day — April 22, 2016. It’s bigger than attending a rally and taking a stand. This Earth Day and beyond, let’s make big stuff happen. Let’s plant 7.8 billion trees for the Earth. Let’s divest from fossil fuels and make cities 100% renewable. Let’s take the momentum from the Paris Climate Summit and build on it. Let’s start now. And let’s not stop.”
